Browns coach announces major change on offense

BEREA, Ohio (WKBN) – Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski announced on Monday that he is relinquishing play-calling duties for the second straight season.

First-year offensive coordinator Tommy Rees will call plays when the Browns return from the bye this Sunday in New York.

Stefanski also announced that rookie Dillon Gabriel will remain the team’s starting quarterback.

Last season, Stefanski turned over play-calling duties to then-offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey. Following the 2024 campaign, Dorsey was fired.

Rees joined the Browns in 2024, serving as tight ends coach. He spent the 2023 season as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of Alabama.

He spent six seasons as a coach at Notre Dame (2017-22), first coaching the quarterbacks and adding the role of offensive coordinator in 2020.

Rees spent the 2016 season as an offensive assistant for the San Diego Chargers.

As a player, Rees played quarterback in the college ranks at Notre Dame. He finished second in Notre Dame history in touchdown passes (61) and third in passing yards (7,351) and later signed as an undrafted free agent with the Washington Commanders.

The Browns are currently 2-6 on the season. They will hit the road to face the Jets on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The game will be televised locally on WKBN-27.
