LORAIN, Ohio (WJW) — Lorain police have determined that the gunshot that fatally struck a Lorain City Schools student in the head last week at Lakeview Park had been accidentally fired by the student’s child relative.
But investigators now believe the gun found at the scene that day wasn’t the one that killed him, according to a Friday update from Lorain police.
Officers called to a shooting at the park along West Erie Avenue at about 6:45 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, found Isaac Brocco-Rivera unresponsive, with an apparent gunshot wound to the head.
“Through exhaustive investigative efforts, detectives have learned that a juvenile family member who was present with Mr. Brocco-Rivera was handling a firearm inside the vehicle, and that the firearm was accidentally discharged, fatally striking Mr. Brocco-Rivera while both were seated in the car,” Lorain police Capt. Jacob Morris wrote.
Investigators recovered a handgun from the scene on the night of the incident, but they later recovered an additional handgun from another location, which is now believed to have fired the shot that killed Brocco-Rivera, according to the Friday update.
Police are now “working closely together” with county prosecutors to determine if the case warrants criminal charges.
Brocco-Rivera was a senior at Lorain Success Academy, schools Superintendent Jeff Graham wrote in a statement published the following Sunday, Oct. 19, on the district’s Facebook page.
“Please know that we have engaged our crisis team and will have supports available for long as needed for students and staff beginning [Monday] morning. Hold your loved ones a little closer and a little tighter, and have a blessed evening,” it reads.
Police are still investigating, according to the release. Anyone with information is urged to call Lorain police investigators at 440-204-2105. Callers can remain anonymous.
