Pennsylvanians to vote in statewide retention for Supreme Court Justices

(WHTM)– Tuesday’s election day is mostly local races, but there is a statewide retention for three Supreme Court justices, and President Donald Trump is weighing in.

Three Democrats are up for re-election on the high court. All three members, Christine Donohue, Kevin Doughtery, and David Wecht, were first elected a decade ago.

Voters will choose yes or no on whether they should get another ten-year term. President Donald Trump took to social media last night to say no, calling them radical, liberal, and woke.

He added that “they unlawfully gerrymandered your congressional maps, which led to my corrupt impeachment(s), and locked you up during COVID by closing your small businesses, schools and churches.”

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, who is urging Pennsylvanians to vote yes, countered with a post of his own. Shapiro said, “Donald Trump has zero credibility when it comes to the rule of law. Remember, this guy who tried to throw out Pennsylvanians’ votes and overturn the 2020 election, who pardoned people who assaulted law enforcement on January 6th.”

This is one of the most expensive retention elections in history. The individuals who want to retain the justices have raised and spent more than $14 million. Those opposed have spent even more.

The Pennsylvania high court is 5-2 in favor of Democrats. If retained, Donohue would face a mandatory retirement in two years.
